Robot insects to remove organs via patients' mouths

Robotic cockroaches which crawl into patients' bodies and remove diseased organs by dragging them back out through the mouth are being developed by one of Britain's top doctors.

Keyhole surgery pioneer Lord Darzi is developing the "bug-bots", which are set to revolutionise scar-free surgery.

In an interview with the Standard, he said doctors will be able to cut out diseased organs and tumours using lasers in the robots' mouths. Recovery time is speeded up dramatically as doctors can withdraw the organs via the mouth.

The former Labour health minister, who is chairman of surgery at Imperial College London, said: "The benefits are very obvious. Less pain, which means earlier mobility and quicker return to work."
