NKR update - Kidneys transplants that last a lifetime (Terasaki & Cai)‏

Received this email from the National Kidney Registry:

The attached research is a MUST read for transplant professionals. It concludes that ample evidence points to antibodies as the main cause of chronic rejection and suggests frequent monitoring (e.g. every 4 months) for timely detection of de novo antibody formation. If detected early, antibodies will likely be of a lower strength and more readily removed than if detected later.

This proof of a causal link between antibodies and chronic rejection appears to be a major breakthrough in transplantation which could extend the functioning life of a transplanted kidney and eliminate the need for subsequent transplants. If you have any additional thoughts on this topic, please email them to me.
